 Its the Festive Season and we wanted to get started with a bang. Not only have we opened up our Winter Wonderland Sim (if you have not visited yet :O  read this post HERE) BUT tonight we really kick things off with a Live Music Gig by none other than the excellent JASE BRANNER. 

Jase is an acoustic musician who plays a wide diversity of well-known cover songs from all eras.   Hearing is believing so....

Your toes tingle inside your boots as you trudge through the deep snow that has, this day, fallen in the valley. Tree branches hang low under the weight of a fresh fall. Your breath dances in the frozen air as you rub your hands together for warmth.

The sun has long since dipped below the horizon and it seems like forever since you left your broken down car to search for a house and the promise of a landline telephone. Your eyes scan the forest in the fading light. “It is too cold to go any farther” you whisper. There is nothing that indicates any civilization in this wilderness. Pulling your coat collar tight up against your chin, you turn to head back to your stranded car and a night of shivering in the fridge that it has become.

You stop. What was that?...... Music?….. No, it must be the wind. But wait….Yes! You turn your head toward the faint sound. Faint yes, but definitely the distant sound of music.

You start to head toward the sounds, feet somehow lighter, no longer trudging, shoulders less hunched.

As you walk, the sound becomes clearer. You hear the beautiful and distinct sound of children's voices singing Christmas songs.

As you clear a cutting between two snowy rock outcrops, you stop dead in your tracks. Eyes widen and your mouth broadens into a huge smile at the sight that opens up before you.

“Oh My, This really is a Winter Wonderland.”

**AS SEEN IN THE SECOND LIFE DESTINATION GUIDE** 

 The original Adventures of Tintin were a series of classic comic books created by the Belgium artist Georges Rémi, who wrote under the pen name ‘Herge.

‘Herge's main character, Tintin, is a young Belgian investigative reporter who gets involved in many exciting adventures in the pursuit of his stories. Snowy, his faithful canine companion is always by his side and  an intriguing and colourful array of supporting characters make sure that the narrative is never dull.

Over 200 million of the books have been sold making it one of the most popular European comics. There have been successful adaptations for radio, tv and film.

A few months prior to his death in March 1983 ‘Herge had penned a brief note “If anyone can bring Tintin successfully to the screen, it is this young American film director…”.

He was referring of course to Steven Spielberg who had the year earlier acquired the film rights to Tintin.

Now 28 years later the Spielberg directed “Tintin and the Secret of the Unicorn” makes it to our cinema screens. The film which features Jamie Bell as Tintin, Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Daniel Craig is basically a treasure hunt for a sunken ship which was commanded by one of Haddock's ancestors. But they are not the only ones searching for the ship.

So, how does it work out? Was ‘Herge's faith well placed in Spielberg? Does the latest incarnation do justice to the original and much loved Tintin?

Well, If bringing Tintin bang up to date with the latest film and animation techniques then this effort has achieved that at a canter. The 3d animation (mostly motion capture) and scenes are truly breathtaking. All the gloss of the cutting edge tech shine through blindingly.

And therein lies the problem.

The film entertains well enough. The storyline, which is drawn from several Tintin adventures, has been put together competently enough. But where the whole piece falls flat on its face is on recreating the soul of the Tintin adventure. It does not leave you with the feeling of being a participant in the story as the original comic adventures never failed to do. Rather you feel very much the bystander.

It is a decent attempt and there is little doubt it will be the Box Office hit that most Spielbergs efforts are. However as his first attempt at an animated picture the mark has been missed. Mr ‘Herge set a very high bar with his brilliance as an artist and story teller and no amount of tech whizz jiggory pokery will draw you into the characters as part of the action as the originals did.

Recently Linden Labs CEO, Rod Humble popped into the Sluniverse Forums and revealed that there were upcoming changes to be made to the SL Viewer (no, not again!!).

“For the UI changes. First you will see a merge of the modes. (basically click

to move + new camera coming into advanced which you can turn to old way

if you like). That should be End of this month.

Next a large GUI change for all our users. Yup we are taking another crack

at UI design again...(Moria drums)

So in fairly short order you will be enjoying a new Linden Lab UI AND new

features to help things run amok inworld.

Good or bad it will be glorious” 

By saying the above Rod was giving us a clear indication that he was full of confidence in what he was doing, where he was going and that he “got it”.

Proof of the pudding, however, as always is in the eating and we would have to wait albeit nervously for some indication of these “glorious” UI changes. A nervous time for many one would think, especially those whose memories of bitter Viewer 2 pills and the swallowing of are still vivid in their avatar psyche.

Well the pudding has been mixed and, offered for those who like to taste the mix before it’s cooked. Yes, the new UI has been released into BETA and can be downloaded here (3.2.0 Beta Candidate)

 for those who are not scared of the continued viewer whiplash.

One presumes that with enough oo’s and aahs of approval a refined mix will be placed in the oven for baking. But what is the verdict on the BETA?

One word can describe my own verdict on the changes “YES!!!!”.

One look at the vast expanse of screen real estate dedicated to..yes..Second Life teased a smile. Then the simple and clear modular style of the icons and menus broadened that smile. It immediately “felt” right. There was no knotting of brow and deep breath before diving in, as was the case with Viewer 2. THIS is a breath of fresh air.

It will appeal to power users and, probably more important at this juncture, new users, who can well, do without the visual hailstorm of options and menus and an unwieldy “drawer”. This is a clean and simple UI for those who want it to be but for those that like to get their hands dirty all the buttons and levers are still there.

It is early days for this UI and there is absolutely no doubt there will be detractors and those that will never be happy unless Linden Lab leap back to viewer 1.3. There are very likely going to be parts of the Viewer that are missing or that don’t quite work. The minute and unworkable “communications center” that was clumped at the bottom right of V2 has now only been moved and clumped at the top right of the BETA viewer is a case in point (I call it chaos corner). But this is a huge leap away from the stigma that will always be associated, right or wrongly, with viewer 2 and, in my opinion, it is a huge leap in the right direction.

It is refreshing that Rod has shown a willingness to engage with different communities, including some, where he may not be expecting to receive the red carpet treatment. He is reasonably active on twitter and is now well known as a lurker on various forums. But probably more important than this is that he is engaging without condescension and always willing to employ his sometimes self effacing wit and undeniable Brit sarcasm. However the jury has been out on his ability to turn a poorly managed platform into something that can really fulfill its very substantial potential. Some would say Mesh was a good indication that he had what it takes but MESH still has a lot of the M Linden era paw prints all over it. But this revamped viewer seems to be Rods baby and as an early indicator of competence, it’s a triumph.

LOGIN 2 LIFE

Login 2 Life is a feature documentary that takes a close look at both the online and offline lives of seven individuals who spend large proportions of their time embedded in the virtual. It endeavours to explore what the duality means and make some sense of it. Is it a passing fad or is it the beginning of something more permanent. 

More and more people are spending time in virtual worlds. Some spend that time out of necessity some in the pursuit of love, business success or pure social interaction. This excellent film takes a good long stare at the phenomenon.

It features Second Life and WOW users. There is a certain amount of sensationalism in regard to the sex element of virtual worlds which is unfortunate. Stroker Serpentine (Second life entrepreneur who has now left SL) features. The documentary was directed by Daniel Moshel and according to Login 2 Life website 

Daniel Moshel is a gamer and an award-winning director.
He was inspired to make this documentary by his personal experience. But this is about more than just gaming – this is about a new lifestyle, necessary for some, fun for most. Bits and pieces of digital life, glimpses linked within a larger network, a personal view of what drives the people behind the screen to live, love and do business in a virtual world.

Some of the segments involve Chinese and German speakers without subtitles but they do not detract from the overall piece. At 88 minutes its not for the feint hearted but it is well worth the effort to watch. The video is free to view ONLY UNTIL 23rd October so check it out.
